Mission 2
The Crosswind Challenge
Lean into the wind to stand still.
Difficulty
Briefing
GPS hold is offline. A crosswind from the east is building. In attitude mode the sticks set the lean — keep the aircraft over the marker while the wind tries to carry it away.
Objectives
- Stay within the circle around the marker
- Hold for as long as you can in 40 s
- Keep facing north
Physics in play
Drag = ½ρV²C_DATilt the thrust to make a horizontal forcetan θ = drag / weight
Hampton’s .02 cents
you can’t push sideways on the air with a multirotor — you can only lean your thrust. Standing still in wind means leaning just enough that the sideways part of your thrust equals the drag.
Instructor insight
It would behoove you to watch the drift begin before correcting. Gusts come and go; the steady lean is what you’re looking for.
